New Spotsylvania Park & Ride adds 700 commuter spaces

Sep 09, 2023

Commuters now have nearly 700 additional parking spaces in Spotsylvania County at a new Park and Ride that VDOT cut the ribbon on today.

Located at Rt. 1 and Commonwealth Drive about 2 miles from I-95 Exit 126, the site offers 14 accessible parking spaces, 10 spaces for motorcycle parking plus a bicycle rack. A dedicated area is provided for transit arrivals and departures and carpool and vanpool pickups and drop offs.

Not stopping there, this $16.5 million project also includes a 10-foot-wide shared use path, and a sidewalk was added along Commonwealth Drive.

The lot is near residential communities in the Lee's Hill, Massaponax, and Jackson Gateway areas of Spotsylvania. There is also a new U.S. Veterans Health Administration outpatient clinic under construction.

With this new Park & Ride, turn lane improvements were built on Rt. 1 and on Commonwealth Drive, which will assist vehicles entering and departing the commuter lot from the intersection. A right-in, right-out entrance on Rt. 1 southbound provides access directly into the new commuter lot.

This project, which went into construction in August 2021 was completed in under 2 years. The funding came from a combination of Virginia's SMART SCALE program, Spotsylvania County funds, and a grant from the I-95/395 Commuter Choice program, which is funded with toll revenue from the I-95/395 Express Lanes facility.

With this new location, Spotsylvania now has 5 Park & Ride commuter lots offering 4,732 parking spaces, according to VDOT.

The County's other Park & Rides are located at:
